HENDERSON RIDING FOR THE DISABLED
A warm welcome back to riding everyone!
A special welcome to all our new riders and their families and whanau. What a wet summer it has been but I hope you all managed to have a good break with your families and friends.
A big thank you to all of those who gave our volunteers yummy Christmas gifts and treats during the last week of term 4. We certainly enjoyed them at our Christmas BBQ.
Riding Dates for Term 1
We started riding on Tuesday 7th February and the last day of riding will be Tuesday 3 April.
Infratil Community Awards
On the 2nd of December we were invited to attend the Infratil Community Awards at the council chambers in Waitakere. Jenny Clifford had done a great nomination for our group. Five of us attended and were delighted to win the Health & Wellbeing Catergory for the region. We won a huge bunch of flowers, a lovely glass sculpture and a cheque for $500. We enjoyed a lovely evening with Penny Hulse, Deputy Mayor and many other voluntary groups who do wonderful work in our community.
Lacey – Lu
Lacey-Lu is our lovely new pony and we are so pleased to have her. It took us nearly a year to find her. We wanted a smaller pony for our smaller riders and Sandra scouted TradeMe until she came up with Lacey.
Lacey is a pretty Welsh mare and is 12 years old. She is a 13.1 hh bay and has a lovely white blaze and four white socks.
We purchased her from Hannalee Jordaan, whose daughters rode Lacey at the Rosedale Pony Club. She has been a lovely little pony who has won numerous ribbons and has excelled as a show hunter.
RDA Volunteer Kym Lang and daughter Abby are kindly taking care of Lacey Lu outside of RDA activities and are doing a great job.
Lacey Lu has settled in well and is already a firm favouriite with the children and volunteers.
Kakogawa Students’ Visit
We once again were pleased to host a group of special needs students from Kakogawa in Japan. Each year a group of youngsters come to experience New Zealand and a visit to Henderson RDA is part of the trip. Seven students came with their teachers on 8th February to experience horse riding. They all did very well despite a couple of them being pretty scared to start with. However, they all had a lovely time in the end.
Many thanks to all the volunteers who turned up on the day to help. It was very hot and you all did a great job. Volunteer Amanda Charlton said, “I haven’t been able to come along and help with the Japanese students before, but I really enjoyed it. It was very different and really fun. It was so rewarding to see the enjoyment on the childrens’ faces and to see their teachers so excited too.”
We had some very positive feedback about the morning from Sharon Simiona the Auckland Council representative and from the Japanese teachers.
Thanks also to volunteers Lonee Munro and Tonya Morgan from Telecom; also Richelle and Posie from Hohepa House who joined us for the morning.
Volunteer Training Day in January
It has been a busy start to the term. We kicked off with a Volunteer Training Day so that our new volunteers could learn about side-walking and leading. We had twelve volunteers turn up and we had a fun morning learning the RDA techniques for handling our riders and horses. Thanks to all those who turned up. We encourage all our volunteers to learn as much as possible so that they can provide the best service to our children.
Thanks also to all the volunteer’s children who turned up so eager to be our riders! They were very patient as they waited their turn to get on the horses.
Please would volunteers park at the end of the driveway facing the main paddock so that we can keep the parking close to the clubhouse available for our children and families, particularly those with wheelchairs and babies. Please also try to park tightly so that we can fit plenty of cars in the space. The sand arena is available to the right as well if there are no horses grazing in there. Please note that the few volunteers who do park close to the clubhouse do so as they bring a lot of bulky or heavy gear down to riding each week.
Does anyone have an old table; plastic or folding that we could use for our trading table?
Rider Profile – Danika Turk
Danika is eleven years old and has been riding with us for nearly three years. Danika “absolutely loves coming to riding and always looks forward to Mondays,” says her mum Melinda. She loves horses and all animals and has three cats and two dogs. She particularly enjoys learning about animals on the computer.
Danika has just made the move to intermediate school at Saint Dominics College where she is currently enjoying English and RE and spending time with her friends. The other sport she enjoys is swimming and does Special Olympics swimming at Westwave.
We love to see your bright smiling face on a Monday morning Danika, and great to see you making such progress with your riding.
Horse Poo for Sale
We have bags of horse poo for sale. Price depends on the size of sack but approximately $3 per bag or four sacks for $10. Please tell your friends and family. It’s great for the garden, organic and straw free.
Thank you to Saddlery Warehouse
A big thank you to Saddlery Warehouse at Kumeu who donated lots of gear to us after Christmas. The goods included a cover, a bridle, numnahs and feed buckets. We were very grateful to receive it and it will all come in very useful.
Volunteer Profile – Coral Lee Karl
Coral came along to see if she could help after seeing an ad in the Western Leader. At the time our Secretary Shirley Boumeester had had a bad accident and was looking to gradually retire from the role. Norma asked Coral if she would be interested in helping with the admin duties.
Coral is now our Secretary in Training. She takes the committee minutes, writes correspondence, manages our databases and does general admin duties.
Coral says “Norma asked me if I would help out with the secretarial role and I have been giving it a go ever since. I am a not a natural office person but I have learned heaps. I really enjoy working with the people and being able to help out, albeit in the background. It is surprising how much work goes on behind the scenes to keep the RDA ticking along”.
Well Coral we certainly appreciate all you do for us. You are definitely making a difference.
Committee Meeting Dates
Please note that everyone is welcome at our committee meetings. They are held on the first Tuesday of each month (term times only) after the rally. We would welcome new people to get involved in the committee. We discuss all the issues related to running the group and new ideas and perspectives are welcome.
We are hoping to hold our Annual General Meeting in March or April. A date will be confirmed shortly. In order to vote at the AGM you will have need to have paid your annual $5 subs! We hope that you can all attend!
Feasibility Study Update
We reported in our last newsletter that we were to go ahead with a Feasibility Study for our covered arena project. The Lottery Grant Board contacted us in December to say that they were going to support the Feasibility Study and will award us a grant for the work on completion of a satisfactory report. So that is fantastic news. Well done in particular to Shirley Furneaux who put in such a lot of work to submit the final application. We are currently working with our consultants at Visitor Solutions to define the future needs of the group.
Brainwave Trust Presentation
Norma will be delivering a Brainwave Presentation: The First Three Years Last Forever for Grandparents Raising Grandchildren.
Date: Wednesday 21 March Time: 12.30pm – 2.00pm, Venue: Oratia Hall, West Coast Road, opposite Oratia School.

Norma has been writing the newsletter for the past six years! She would like to pass the job to someone else. We produce three or four newsletters a year to inform our riders, families and supporters about our work and successes. If anyone would like to put their hand up to do the newsletter Norma would be very grateful. The job probably requires about three hours a term. Erika Bouwmeester can still do the final layout and photo arranging and Norma will still be on hand to contribute and help.
