Henderson Riding for the Disabled
Well folks it hasn’t been a very good term so far in terms of the weather. The grounds are wet and we have had a lot of rain and wind. Never mind, we shall persevere and endeavour to ride despite the weather. Please make sure the children have some warm clothes and a rain jacket in case of showers and chilly days.
Our last day for riding this term is Tuesday 12 July. Term 3 for Monday riders only, will commence on Monday 1 August. We look forward to seeing our Tuesday riders back in Term 4.
We held our AGM in May and the same committee was voted back in. Just to confirm:
- President – Norma Hayward
- Vice President – Lynn Radford
- Secretary – Shirley Boumeester
- Treasurer – Shirley Furneaux
- Horse Manager – Sandra Lilo
- Head Coach – Pia Saxton
- Regional Rep – Pia Saxton
- Erika Bouwmeester
- Jenny Clifford
- Dave Brooks – Social Secretary
- and Lee Benson – Riders Rep
I would also like to welcome Coral Lee Karl who is our secretary in training. Most of you will now have met and spoken with Coral. She is helping Shirley Boumeester with the secretarial role, taking minutes and looking after our various email lists so that we can communicate with everyone efficiently.
Committee Meeting Dates
Please note that everyone is welcome at our committee meetings. They are held on the first Tuesday of each month (term times only) after the rally. We would welcome new people to get involved in the committee. We discuss all the issues related to running the group and new ideas and perspectives are welcome.
Henderson RDA Constitution
It was agreed at our AGM that we would review the rules/constitution of our group this year. A meeting to discuss changes will take place after rally on Tuesday 14 June. All are welcome to attend.
National RDA Awareness Week
This was in the last week of April and to participate we decided to have a stand outside Mitre 10 Mega in Henderson. Many thanks to Shirley Furneaux, Lee Benson, Karen Fray and Gaylene Crockett who manned the stall. We had a lot of interest in our service and raised over $300 in donations.
Rider Profile – Jethro Taylor
Jethro is four years old and has been coming to riding for about a year and a half. Jethro lives with his mum and dad and big brother Gabriel who is 6. Jethro attends Ranui kindy three times a week and loves it. He really enjoys all the opportunities to make friends, explore new territory and take part in all the activities. Jethro also attends Raukatauri Music Therapy once a week which has been fantastic for his communication skills.
Riding has really helped develop Jethro’s core strength, balance and postural control. He thoroughly enjoys being in the care of our volunteers and loves the movement of the horse and being high up. Jethro usually rides Markie and loves to hear Markie snort.
Volunteer Training – Day 2
Friday 1 July 2011 9.15 – 12.30pm. All volunteers who attended Day 1 on 25 March are invited to come back for Day 2. It will once again be help at the club rooms and start at 9.15 and finish at about 12.30. Please note you must have attended Day 1 to participate in this training day.
NZ RDA Association put out a monthly newsletter. Anyone wishing to receive this monthly update by email from NZRDA, would they please email email@example.com and she will arrange it.
Coral has been doing a fantastic job of typing up new Rider Cards, which will be finished soon. They will be an easy-to-read, one page sheet at the front of each rider’s file, outlining contact information and objectives/instructions for each child. This will make it easier for sidewalkers to be informed about their rider’s needs and goals. Thanks also to Lynn, Pia, Sandra and the sidewalkers who have contributed to updating this information. Please note that all this information is strictly private and confidential. Parents are of course welcome to view their own child’s file at any time. Just ask one of the volunteers who works with your child to get your file out for you. We are always happy to discuss the information we keep on file with you. Any questions or comments about the Rider Cards please see Norma or Pia. We hope that you find them helpful.
Valley Day – Sat 21 May
We were invited by our volunteer Karen Fray of the Henderson Valley Ratepayers Association to attend this community day at the Henderson Valley school. We took our display board down and spoke to the local community about the work we do. Thanks to Shelly, Tessa, Sandra, Lee and Karen for helping with this.
Talks to the Community
Norma will be out spreading the message about the work we do over the next couple of months.
She has talks lined up with the Titirangi Womens Institute, Titirangi Ladies Probus and the students of NZ Childcare Association in Henderson.
If anyone knows of a group who would like to hear about the work we do at RDA, please let Norma know.
Everyone please continue to support our trading table. We would appreciate any spare produce from the garden, books or DVDs, small plants, toys, etc. Prices are marked or by donation.
